Horns Rev II sparks up
Denmark's Horn's Rev II offshore wind farm has started producing first power said operator DONG Energy after the first of the planned 91 turbine 209 Megawatt facility in the Danish sector of the North Sea began producing electricity.
Dong said the development is the world's largest offshore wind farm so far and is the “tangible result” of efforts to increase production of renewable energy.
Seven Danish companies and regional governments have committed to taking power from the site.
Installation of more turbines at the offshore site is due to take place throughout this summer and the project is due to be completed by December this year in time for the COP 15 climate change summit which takes place in Copenhagen.
Up to 200,000 households are to be powered with electricity generated at Horns Rev II which uses 2.3 Megawatt turbines supplied by Siemens and which covers an offshore area of 35 sq. km, (13.5 sq. miles) located between 30 and 40 km (18.75 – 25 miles) from the Danish coast at Blåvandshuk.
Horns Rev II, which sends power back to shore via a 100 km (62.5 mile) transmission cable, follows on from the earlier Horns Rev I development which was commissioned in 2003.
Offshore contractor A2Sea installed the first 114.5 m (375 ft) turbine at the Horns Rev II site using the installation vessel Sea Power back in March.
