Sheringham Shoal construction kicks off
Published 20.11.2009 13:39:47 by John Bradbury
Construction work has commenced for the UK's Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm being developed by Norway's Statoil and Statkraft with drilling of two ducts to carry power cabling from the project ashore. Directional drilling techniques have been used by Visser and Smith Marine Contractor to build the two ducts which be use to pull in the 22 km (13.75 mile) export power cables to a landfall point for Sheringham Shoal. Onshore cabling is being constructed by another contractor, Carillion Plc. A horizontal rig has been set up onshore at a joining pit behind the beach on the coastline at Weybourne, Norfolk on the UK east coast, where the 320 metre-long ducts are being drilled. The last section of the ducts will go out under the beach leaving the beach itself undisturbed during the onshore construction programme, Visser and Marine have disclosed in a project statement. As part of the construction programme a multi-purpose vessel will be moored offshore to carry out the marine end of the cabling installation programme, with divers. Work is due to be completed mid-December. Statoil and Statkfraft are developing Sheringham Shoal in a joint venture, Scira Offshore Energy Limited, and the US $1.7 Bn project , rated to produce up to 315, Megawatts from 88 turbines, is due to start producing power in 2011. ![]() Extends Songa Venus' Aussie drilling jobSonga Venus will continue drilling down under after Songa Offshore and Shell development signed an agreement. ![]() Crane company gives a lift to SunriseAberdeen-based EnerMech has helped out Technip offshore Brazil by servicing pedestal cranes on board the Sunrise 2000 pipe-lay ship while it was docked in Rio de Janeiro. ![]() Noreco drills dry wellOperator Det norske oljeselskap has completed drilling of a dry exploration well.
