More oil in Shaikan
Published 23.11.2009 13:39:05 by John Bradbury
Gulf Keystone Petroleum reported an additional Triassic discovery with its Shaikan 1 exploration well onshore Kurdistan.

Testing of the Triassic interval at Shaikan 1 produced 10,000 boe/d after the well was drilled to a total depth of 2,950 m (9,676 ft), and it brings the total aggregate flow rate from Jurassic and Triassic intervals in the well up to 20,000 boe/d.

Following a first Triassic test flow rate of 2,000 b/d of oil and 2 Mmcf/d of gas – Gulf Keystone said a second Triassic test produced 6,000 b/d of 53 to 55 degree API oil and 21 MMscf/day of gas – equivalent to 10,000 boe per day.

“The first Triassic test was severely limited by surface restrictions and down hole tool problems.  Internal engineering analysis of the test data indicates that the first Triassic zone could have flowed at rates up to 14,000 boe per day,” the company declared. “This gives the Triassic section alone   potential aggregate rates of about 24,000 boe per day.”

A further Shaikan 2 appraisal well; is due to be drilled next year.
