"We can not interfere"
Published 09.02.2010 08:08:04 by Elisabeth Kolstad
Minister for Petroleum and Energy Terje Riis-Johansen is disappointed that Aker Solutions  did not get the Goliat deal.

The minister told NTB that Norwegian deliveries to the development of the Goliat field, however, will be close to 50 per cent of the total budget for field development.

"The allocation of the platform building is a commercial decision which Norwegian authorities can not meddle with. We have contributed by setting strict requirements for the project. This is the first field development in the Barents Sea. So it's strict quality standards to license and operator".

Riis-Johansen would not comment on previous unfortunate experiences with large offshore and shipbuilding contracts that went to foreign shipyards, other than that they have to follow the quality requirements.

Whether the South Korean government has subsidised Hyundai Heavy Industries, he refers to the players and the international regulations that apply.

"If there is is a suspicion of subsidies, then this must be followed up by the WTO system, "he says.

The minister is the first to be sorry that a major contract is lost in a difficult period for the Norwegian maritime industry.

"There are fewer major projects to compete on the shelf now. Subsea solutions, smaller devices and connection to existing platforms enables missions that Goliath platform rare," says the minister.
