Exxon readies for deep Black Sea campaign
Published 17.03.2010 11:45:11 by John Bradbury
ExxonMobil has signalled plans to start a deepwater drilling campaign next year using a specially designed newbuild drillship from Transocean.Transocean's Deepwater Champion is equipped to drill up to 12,190 meters (40,000 ft), in water depths up to 3,600 metres (11,800 ft) - almost as deep as any deepwater wells in the US Gulf of Mexico. Deepwater Champion is currently being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in the Ulsan Shipyard in South Korea and is expected to drill its first well in the Turkish sector of the Black Sea in the first half of next year following delivery. One of the features of the double-hulled rig is that it has removable sections on the drilling derrick, so that it can easily transit below bridges across the Bosphorus Strait near Istanbul, linking the Black Sea with the Mediterranean via the Aegean Sea. “We look forward to utilising a world-class drillship with superior ultra-deepwater technology in the Turkish Black Sea,” declared Elwyn Griffiths, vice president for ExxonMobil Exploration speaking at a Turkish Oil and Gas Showcase event taking place in the Turkish capital, Anakara. ExxonMobil entered agreed with Turkish national oil company TPAO back in November 2008 to explore deepwater prospects in the Samsun block in the Black Sea, in the AR/TOP/3922 licence area. And in January this year the US oil giant agreed to take a 25% stake in three further sub-blocks with TPAO. ![]() Arrests for Greenpeace fourFour Greenpeace protesters who boarded the Stena Don rig working on a deepwater well offshore Greenland for Cairn Energy have been arrested.
