Float over finalised
Published 12.07.2010 10:15:04 by John Bradbury
Dutch marine transport specialist Dockwise has done what no company has achieved before: A successful float over operation mating a hull from Russia with topsides in Korea.Dockwise reported that the Vyborg project worth US $100 million in total has proceeded with the successful mating of the first of two 15,000 tonnes semi-submersible hulls with a 19,000 tonnes topsides. Dockwise staff were working round the clock, 24 hours a day for seven days to get the job done, and completed the first operation on Sunday – while their countrymen in South Africa went down 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final. Both semi-submersible hulls have been built at Vyborg, in Russia, and the first topsides has been mated in Korea. The operation was carried out by connecting the first hull to a pre-laid anchor spread, and then ballasting the hull down to a mating draft of 27 metres (88 ft), allowing the hull to be floated over and welded in place with leg mating units after the two units were aligned. Dockwise vessel Black Marlin was used to transport one of the topsides to the location for the float-over and bring it into position for the operation which involved more than 16 vessels including tugs, a crane and anchor barges plus guard boats. “This has been a 24-hour-a-day operation for over a week, and everyone has been working together to get the job done. It is the team's focus towards the end goal that has made this first float-over in Korea a success,” declared Dockwise project manager John van der Woning. ![]() No new money: KNOCKNOC has confirmed it will not put any more money on the table to try and complete its hostile £1.67 Bn (US $2.57 Bn) takeover of Dana Petroleum.
