"Values not important for drilling decision"
Published 15.04.2010 08:32:33 by NTB
Oil and gas worth hundreds of billions off the Lofoten Islands, is not reason enough to go ahead with drilling in the area, said the Norwegian Environment Minister Erik Solheim from the Socialist Party.

There could be oil and gas worth vast amounts under the seabed off Lofoten and Vesterålen, but it is of no importance to the minister, writes Dagsavisen.

Friday the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate will release its estimates for how much oil and gas there is in the Lofoten and Vesterålen areas. Although the estimates would indicate that the oil and gas deposits are very large, Solheim doesn't think that's a decisive factor.

"It is, in my opinion, not a decisive argument in this context, if there is great value there. Norway has an unprecedented amount of money in the oil fund, "said Solheim.

Head of Information, Sigbjørn Aanes, in the Oil Industry Association (OLF) says he is surprised.

"I am surprised that Solheim does not think it's important if there is great value there or not. When we talk about so large values of oil and gas, we are talking not just about money in the pension fund or the state budget. When we talk about local activity, jobs and spin-offs for the local and regional community that will be of great importance, "said Aanes
