Equivalent to three Skarv fields
Published 16.04.2010 10:16:06 by Elisabeth Kolstad
Updated calculations show that the Lofoten and Vesterålen areas' oil and gas resources are equivalent with three Skarv fields."This makes the waters off Lofoten and Vesterålen very attractive, "says Gro Brækken in the Oil Industry Association (OLF). Based on new geological data, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate updated the estimate of how much oil and gas are located under the seabed in the Nordland VI, Nordland VII and Troms II. Although the NPD's resource estimate has been somewhat lowered, however, the estimates indicate that there is still 1.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent. "This is only an estimate. It is well known, that we must explore to find it. It is impossible to say anything for certain about the oil and gas volumes before the drilling is completed, "said Brækken. The Director General Bente Nyland emphasised that the estimates are uncertain until the drilling is completed. In Norway, there has been a tradition for the oil majors to gaine access to geological data from the government. This is partly done so that several parties can contribute to the interpretation of the data, in order to get the best overview possible, of the formations below the seabed. "The industry should also get access to the geological data this time. This way, the experts in the industry can help ensure the most accurate overview of opportunities in the promising areas off Lofoten and Vesterålen", says Brækken. There is uncertainty associated with the estimate for the undiscovered resources. However, this uncertainty can be reduced over time, e.g. through staged exploration including the drilling of exploration wells. ![]() No new money: KNOCKNOC has confirmed it will not put any more money on the table to try and complete its hostile £1.67 Bn (US $2.57 Bn) takeover of Dana Petroleum.
